Netbook PC manufacturer Asustek has revealed intentions to become the world’s third largest laptop vendor by 2011. Asustek is currently the fifth largest computer vendor in the world, having pioneered the hugely popular low cost netbook PC in 2007. With rival brands entering into the low cost laptop market, Asustek has begun to lose market share. Despite making a fourth quarter loss last year, Asustek has announced plans to launch five new laptops based on Intel’s consumer ultra-low voltage chip (CULV) this year, as part of its strategy to increase market share. Asustek’s Chief Executive Jerry Shen revealed the company hopes to be able to expand its current market share of 5 per cent to as much as 10 per cent in the next couple of years.

Consumer Laptop Complaints Rise in 2009
A new report has revealed that the number consumer complaints about laptop PCs have risen by 42 per cent during the past twelve months. The report from the Consumer Direct division of the UK Office of Fair Trading said that overall complaints dropped in 2009, but those relating to laptops and TVs increased significantly. With 12,395 complaints made about notebooks alone, not including desktop PCs, director of Consumer Direct, David Fisher, considered the possibility that the increase in the number of complaints could simply correlate to the significant jump in laptop sales in recent years. PC World recently reported that nearly one in three consumers has suffered significant problems with their notebook computer, citing Dell and Hewlett-Packard products as the most likely to encounter difficulties. By contract, Apple and Toshiba were named as the most reliable.

Malaysian Government Behind Laptop PC Target
The Malaysian government is failing to meet its computer distribution target, according to the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (PIKOM). The government had set a target of achieving 50 per cent broadband penetration rate by the end of 2010, though with this figure currently standing at 26 per cent, the target is looking an unlikely prospect. 35 per cent of Malaysian homes have laptop or desktop PCs, but PIKOM warned this figure would need to double in order to meet the 50 per cent internet availability target. The 50 per cent target would allegedly add 135,000 new jobs to the Malaysian economy, and another percentage point to their GDP.

New figures from NPD Group have revealed that the new Microsoft operating system Windows 7 is selling considerably faster than its predecessor, Windows Vista . Microsoft has sold 234 per cent more boxed editions of the highly rated Windows 7 compared to the poorly received Windows Vista during the initial release stage of both products. However, in terms of revenue, the release of Windows 7 perhaps hasn?t provided Microsoft with the financial boost they may have hoped for. Much of Microsoft?s marketing ahead of the launch surrounded the affordable Home Premium version of Windows 7, which now comes preinstalled on a number of laptop and desktop PCs . Consequently, revenues resulting from the launch of Windows 7 are 82 per cent higher than from the launch of Vista, despite the high volume of sales.
